Clear Lines, Correct Spaces
Line striping fades faster than most owners expect. Sun, rain and tires wear paint down within a few years; HomeGuide says striping usually lasts two to five years. In Valdosta, where lots serve shoppers, students, patients and congregations, faded lines mean crooked parking, lost spaces and confused traffic. Fresh lines fix that quickly and at low cost.
ADA rules when you restripe
The Department of Justice's guidance says restriping a parking lot triggers the 2010 ADA Standards, so accessible parking must meet current requirements when lines are repainted. The basics:
- Required accessible spaces: 1 for 1 to 25 total spaces, 2 for 26 to 50, 3 for 51 to 75, 4 for 76 to 100, 5 for 101 to 150, 6 for 151 to 200
- At least one van-accessible space, and one of every six accessible spaces in larger lots
- Car spaces at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch access aisle
- Van spaces 132 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle, or 96 inches with a 96-inch aisle
- Identification signs with the bottom at least 60 inches above the ground
- Spaces and aisles no steeper than 1:48
Spaces are counted per lot, and accessible stalls go on the most level ground closest to an accessible entrance.
New layouts
After an overlay, a rebuild or a sealcoat, the lot can be laid out fresh. That is a chance to improve traffic flow, add stalls or fix tight ones. HomeGuide notes a new layout costs about 20 to 50 percent more than restriping existing lines.
What we paint
- Parking stalls, standard and compact
- Accessible stalls, aisles and symbols
- Arrows, stop bars and lane lines
- Crosswalks, fire lanes and loading zones
- Curb paint and stenciled words and numbers
Working around heat and storms
Paint needs a clean, dry surface. In summer we stripe early in the day and around storm forecasts, and we close sections long enough for the paint to dry before cars return. Many owners pair striping with a sealcoat, since lines stand out best on a dark surface.
Lots we stripe
Retail and restaurant lots, apartment complexes, medical and office buildings, churches, schools and warehouses, from a dozen stalls to several hundred.
Signs and wheel stops
Accessible stalls need identification signs mounted with the bottom at least 60 inches above the ground. Where an accessible route runs in front of stalls, wheel stops keep cars from shrinking the route below 36 inches. We point out where signs or stops are missing.

Lines and stencils painted; sections reopened when dry.

Line Striping Questions
How often should we restripe?
Every two to five years for most lots, more often on busy ones.
Do we have to update accessible spaces?
Yes. Restriping triggers the 2010 ADA Standards.
Can you stripe at night or on weekends?
Often, yes, to keep your lot open during business hours.
Can you add spaces to our lot?
Sometimes, by adjusting layout and stall angles within fire lane and accessibility limits. We show you the options.
What paint do you use?
Traffic paint suited to asphalt, on a clean, dry surface. We tell you the product and drying time before we start.
Do you stencil reserved spaces?
Yes, including words, numbers and symbols, which HomeGuide prices at about $2 to $5 per letter or number.
Can you stripe right after sealcoating?
Once the sealer has cured, yes. Many lots are sealed and striped as one project.
