Paving in Morven
Asphalt paving in Morven continues a story that started with dirt roads. Morven grew around Hamilton Sharpe's log store, built around 1826 on Coffee Road, and was known as Sharpe's Store until it was renamed in 1853. It is described as the oldest community established by Europeans in Brooks County and was incorporated in 1900. The first paved road reached the town only in the winter of 1948 to 1949, from Quitman. Today Morven has about 506 residents and sits at the junction of State Routes 76 and 94, about 8 miles west of I-75.
Rural drives
Most Morven-area properties are farms and homes on acreage with gravel or dirt drives. Converting a drive to asphalt starts with the base: we regrade, replace stone that has sunk into the sand, compact and crown the surface, then pave. For farm lanes that carry trucks and equipment, we build heavier.
State route connections
SR 76, SR 94 and SR 133 run through or near town. Driveway connections to state routes need a GDOT permit for work in the right-of-way. Brooks County handles county roads.
Drainage
Flat farm country moves storm water along ditches. A blocked or undersized pipe under a driveway entrance causes backups and washouts. We check pipes at every rural estimate and replace them during paving if needed.
Thickness for farm traffic
Lanes that carry grain trucks, trailers and tractors need more than a standard residential section. HomeGuide lists 3 to 4 inches of asphalt over 8 to 10 inches of base for heavier vehicles. We size the section to the actual traffic and put it in the quote.
Locates and private lines
Before any excavation we file a Georgia 811 ticket and ask about private water, irrigation and power lines on farm properties.
In town
For homes, churches and the city hall area, we handle driveway replacement, patching, sealing and small-lot striping.
