Frequently Asked Questions
Asphalt Paving Questions
How much does a new asphalt driveway cost in Valdosta?
National guides list new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 (Angi). HomeGuide puts an 800-square-foot driveway at around $4,000 to $9,600. Length, base work and removal change the total, so we give you a written price after the visit.
Is asphalt a good choice in South Georgia heat?
Yes, when it is built on a firm base and sealed every few years. Asphalt softens in summer, which is why fresh pavement needs a few days before heavy use and why sealcoating to slow sun damage pays off.
Do I need a permit for driveway work in Valdosta?
Driveway work in the public right-of-way inside the city needs approval from the Engineering Department, and the Historical District adds a Zoning Department sign-off. Work on state highways needs a GDOT permit. Work that stays on your property generally does not need a right-of-way permit, but we confirm before scheduling.
Can you pave over my gravel driveway?
Often the existing gravel can be regraded, topped up and compacted as part of the new base. If it is thin or mixed with sand and soil, we add stone first. We check at the site visit.
When is the best time to pave around Valdosta?
Most of the year works. Spring and fall are ideal; summer is fine around afternoon storms; and winter work happens on dry, mild days, since hard freezes are rare here.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
Cost guides put asphalt driveways at 15 to 30 years. A good base, drainage, sealing every few years and prompt crack repair push toward the long end.
Do you work outside Lowndes County?
Yes. We serve Brooks, Cook, Berrien, Lanier, Echols and Clinch counties as well.
Driveway Paving Questions
What does driveway paving cost in Valdosta?
National guides list about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 (Angi). An 800-square-foot driveway runs about $4,000 to $9,600 in HomeGuide figures. We give you a written price after seeing the property.
My lot is flat. Will the driveway puddle?
Not if it is built with a consistent slope. We set the fall so water runs to the street or the yard and away from the house.
Do I need a new culvert pipe?
If the existing pipe under your driveway is crushed, clogged or undersized, replacing it during paving is the best time. If it sits in the right-of-way, the permit covers it.
How long until I can park on it?
Usually a few days for cars, longer in summer heat and for heavy vehicles.
Parking Lot Paving Questions
How long will a new lot last?
HomeAdvisor gives asphalt lots about 20 to 30 years with routine care, with resurfacing typically every 15 to 20 years.
Can you pave our lot in sections?
Yes. Phasing keeps entrances and some parking open throughout.
Our lot floods in heavy rain. Can that be fixed?
Often. Regrading low areas and adjusting inlets during a rebuild or overlay can move water where it belongs.
Do you build from engineered plans?
Yes. On engineered projects we build to the plans and specifications.
Do we need a site plan review to expand our lot?
Adding paved area can trigger stormwater or site plan review with the city or county. We recommend checking with them before the design is final, and we can provide the area and section details they ask for.
Asphalt Patching Questions
Why does my pothole keep coming back?
The base under it is still wet or washed out. Filling the hole leaves the cause in place; a saw-cut patch with base repair removes it.
How long does a hot-mix patch last?
When the base is corrected and the joint sealed, a patch can last as long as the surrounding pavement.
Is there a minimum charge?
Most crews have one because mobilizing costs the same for a small job. HomeGuide lists typical minimums of $100 to $250.
Can you match the patch to the old driveway?
New asphalt is darker at first. A sealcoat over the whole driveway evens out the color.
Can you patch in summer?
Yes, on dry days. Hot mix actually compacts well in warm weather; we just work around afternoon storms.
Sealcoating Questions
How often should I sealcoat in Valdosta?
Every few years for most driveways. Strong sun and heavy use point toward the shorter end of the range.
Can I seal a new driveway right away?
No. Wait three to six months so the asphalt can cure.
What if it rains after sealing?
A storm on fresh sealer can wash it off, which is why we watch the forecast and reschedule if needed.
Does sealcoat fix cracks?
No. Cracks are filled first; the sealer goes over them.
Should a rental driveway be sealed?
If it is sound, yes. A sealcoat is inexpensive, makes a property show better between tenants and slows sun damage.
Crack Sealing Questions
Is crack sealing worth it on an old driveway?
If the driveway is still firm, yes. It slows water damage and extends the life of the surface.
Can alligator cracks be sealed?
Sealing does not fix them. Those areas need to be cut out and patched.
How long does crack sealant last?
Typically a few years, depending on traffic and crack movement. We recommend checking cracks every year or two.
Will the sealed cracks show?
Yes, as dark lines. A sealcoat afterward makes them less noticeable.
When is the best time of year for crack sealing?
Cooler months, when cracks are open widest. In South Georgia that means late fall through early spring, though dry days the rest of the year work too.
Line Striping Questions
How often should we restripe?
Every two to five years for most lots, more often on busy ones.
Do we have to update accessible spaces?
Yes. Restriping triggers the 2010 ADA Standards.
Can you stripe at night or on weekends?
Often, yes, to keep your lot open during business hours.
Can you add spaces to our lot?
Sometimes, by adjusting layout and stall angles within fire lane and accessibility limits. We show you the options.
What paint do you use?
Traffic paint suited to asphalt, on a clean, dry surface. We tell you the product and drying time before we start.
Do you stencil reserved spaces?
Yes, including words, numbers and symbols, which HomeGuide prices at about $2 to $5 per letter or number.
Can you stripe right after sealcoating?
Once the sealer has cured, yes. Many lots are sealed and striped as one project.
