What Goes Into a Driveway That Lasts

Driveway paving in Valdosta is a short job on top of careful groundwork. A finished asphalt driveway is only a few inches thick. What keeps it flat and crack-free for years is the compacted base under it and the slope that sends water off it. Most of the driveway failures we see around Lowndes County come from one of three causes: loose sand or soft soil left under the base, a base that was too thin, or water standing on a flat surface until it worked its way in.

Replace or keep repairing?

A driveway needs replacing when the problems go deeper than the surface:

  • Interconnected cracking that looks like alligator skin
  • Depressions that hold water after every storm
  • Potholes that reopen after patching
  • Edges crumbling into the grass
  • Tree roots lifting long sections

If only a few areas show these signs and the rest is firm, patching and sealing are usually the better value. We tell you which way we would go and why.

Building the base on sandy ground

Coastal Plain soils around Valdosta are often sandy on top with denser, clayey layers below. Loose sand can carry a driveway once it is compacted, but it moves if it is not. Organic topsoil, roots and wet pockets have to come out. After clearing, we compact the subgrade, then place graded aggregate base and compact it in lifts. HomeGuide lists a standard residential section as 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of base, and 3 to 4 inches over 8 to 10 inches for trucks, trailers or RVs. Your quote states which we are building.

Slope on a flat lot

Many Valdosta lots are close to level, and a driveway that is perfectly flat will puddle. We set a consistent fall, typically toward the street or to one side, and make sure the driveway does not send water toward the garage or the house. Where a roadside ditch runs across the front of the property, the culvert under the driveway has to be clear, the right size and set at the right height. If that pipe sits in the public right-of-way, it is part of the city, county or GDOT permit.

Gravel to asphalt

Plenty of homes outside town have gravel or sand-and-shell drives. Gravel on sandy ground tends to sink and spread, and it ruts after storms. Converting to asphalt can reuse sound stone as part of the base. We check how much usable stone is left, add and compact more where needed, then pave.

Living with a new driveway

Fresh asphalt is soft in South Georgia heat. Stay off it for the time we give you, avoid turning the wheel while parked, and put a board under trailer jacks and kickstands. Sealcoating should wait three to six months while the asphalt cures.

Driveway Paving Questions

What does driveway paving cost in Valdosta?

National guides list about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 (Angi). An 800-square-foot driveway runs about $4,000 to $9,600 in HomeGuide figures. We give you a written price after seeing the property.

My lot is flat. Will the driveway puddle?

Not if it is built with a consistent slope. We set the fall so water runs to the street or the yard and away from the house.

Do I need a new culvert pipe?

If the existing pipe under your driveway is crushed, clogged or undersized, replacing it during paving is the best time. If it sits in the right-of-way, the permit covers it.

How long until I can park on it?

Usually a few days for cars, longer in summer heat and for heavy vehicles.
