Paving in Clyattville

Asphalt paving in Clyattville is country work close to town. Clyattville, about 6.5 miles south-southwest of Valdosta on State Route 31 (Madison Highway), was listed as a census-designated place in 2020 with 552 residents. The community dates to the 1840s; from 1837 to 1848 it was known as Forest Grove, and it took its name when the post office moved to James M. Clyatt's store in 1848. When the Valdosta Railway came through in the late 1890s, the community shifted toward the tracks.

Mills, rail and trucks

In the early 1950s Owens-Illinois built a paper mill and bag plant in Clyattville. Industrial traffic and the rail line mean some roads and private drives see heavy trucks. Where a driveway or lot carries trucks, we build a thicker base and asphalt section and rebuild failed areas full-depth.

Long country driveways

Many Clyattville homes sit on acreage with long gravel drives. On sandy ground, gravel sinks and spreads, and drives rut after storms. We regrade, add and compact base, crown the surface and pave, with edges backfilled so they stay supported. Long drives can be paved in phases.

Near Wild Adventures

The Wild Adventures theme park, started in the 1990s as Liberty Farms, is about two miles north. Traffic along the corridor on busy days is something to plan around when scheduling deliveries and paving.

Choosing what to pave first

On a long drive, it often makes sense to pave the section nearest the house and the entrance at the road first, and leave a straight, level middle section as compacted gravel until later. We price the whole drive and the sections so you can decide.

Drainage near the highway

Roadside ditches along SR 31 carry a lot of water in summer storms. The pipe under your driveway entrance needs to be clear and sized for the flow, and if it sits in the state right-of-way, replacing it falls under the GDOT permit.

Locates

Before any excavation we file a Georgia 811 ticket and ask about private lines before digging.

Permits

Clyattville is unincorporated, so roads are maintained by Lowndes County or, on SR 31, by GDOT. Driveway work in the state right-of-way needs a GDOT permit.
