Patches That Stay Put

Asphalt patching is how most driveways and lots in Valdosta stay in service for their full life. When a small area fails, cutting it out and rebuilding it costs a fraction of resurfacing, and if the base under it is corrected, the repair lasts. A bag of cold patch tossed into a wet hole, on the other hand, rarely makes it through the next storm season.

Why spots fail

Most local failures start with water. A downspout dumping onto the pavement, a low area that holds rain, or an open crack that has let water into the base for a few seasons all weaken what is underneath. In sandy soil, water can carry fines out of the base and leave a void. Once support is gone, the asphalt flexes under every vehicle until it breaks into a pothole or a patch of alligator cracking.

How we patch

Saw-cut, full-depth patches

We cut square edges around the damaged area, beyond the edge of the cracking, and remove the broken asphalt. Wet or washed-out base is dug out and replaced with compacted aggregate. The cut edges are tacked, hot mix is placed and rolled flush, and the joint is sealed.

Edge repair

Broken edges along lawns and ditches are cut back, rebuilt on new base and backfilled so they are supported.

Utility cuts

Trenches dug across a driveway for water, sewer or cable often settle. We bring them back to grade with compacted base and patch with hot mix.

Root damage

Live oaks and pines are common in Valdosta yards, and their roots can lift and crack pavement. We cut out the lifted section and rebuild it, and talk with you about the tree before cutting any root.

Patch, overlay or replace?

Patching makes sense when failures are scattered. When the whole surface is aged but firm, an overlay may be better. When failures cover most of the area, replacement is usually the better investment. We explain which applies.

Timing

Hot-mix patches go down best on dry days, which in South Georgia means working around afternoon storms in summer. Because hard freezes are rare here, patching can be done most of the year.

Multiple properties

Property managers and landlords with several sites can group patching work into one mobilization. That spreads the minimum charge across more repairs and gets every property fixed on one schedule.

Asphalt Patching Questions

Why does my pothole keep coming back?

The base under it is still wet or washed out. Filling the hole leaves the cause in place; a saw-cut patch with base repair removes it.

How long does a hot-mix patch last?

When the base is corrected and the joint sealed, a patch can last as long as the surrounding pavement.

Is there a minimum charge?

Most crews have one because mobilizing costs the same for a small job. HomeGuide lists typical minimums of $100 to $250.

Can you match the patch to the old driveway?

New asphalt is darker at first. A sealcoat over the whole driveway evens out the color.

Can you patch in summer?

Yes, on dry days. Hot mix actually compacts well in warm weather; we just work around afternoon storms.
